School Dress Guidelines

Safety 

We wear clothing that helps everyone stay physically and emotionally safe. 

• Clothing must allow for movement and school activities (e.g., P.E., recess). 

• Shoes should be secure and practical for students to safely participate in physical activity at recess, in physical education, or during emergency situations. (closed-toed with a strap across the back). 

• No clothing that promotes or displays violence, drugs, weapons, or unsafe items (e.g., sharp jewelry). 

• Face coverings are only allowed for health, safety, or religious/cultural reasons. 

• Students and staff should refrain from wearing fragrances to reduce exposure risk for people with life threatening allergies. 

Ownership 

We take responsibility for how we present ourselves and how we treat others. 

• Students are expected to dress in a way that supports learning and reflects personal responsibility. 

• Clothing should not expose undergarments or private areas. 

• Students must wear shirts long enough to cover the chest, back and stomach area. 

• Students may wear clothing appropriate for outside use. Pajamas or sleepwear may be worn only on approved days as part of school wide spirit days, class celebrations or parties. 

Acceptance 

We celebrate everyone's identity, culture, and personal expression. 

• Clothing that reflects a student’s gender identity, cultural heritage, or religion is fully supported. 

• Students may wear religious headwear (e.g., hijabs, turbans, yarmulkes) and cultural attire (e.g., dashikis, regalia). 

• Gender-affirming clothing that fits within the guidelines is welcome. 

• Spirit days and cultural celebrations are for everyone — students can dress in ways that express who they are. 

Respect 

We treat all people with kindness and dignity. 

• Clothing must not contain hate speech, offensive language, discriminatory messages, suggestive or violent imagery. 

• Non-religious headwear, hats and hoods may not be worn in the building’s classrooms, common areas, cafeteria, hallways, bathrooms, or offices.  

• Staff will address dress concerns privately and respectfully — no shaming, no assumptions. 

• If a dress code issue arises, students will work with staff to resolve the issue calmly and respectfully. 

• Families will only be contacted for repeated or significant concerns, with a focus on support.
